The square root of 5,

[tex]\sqrt 5[/tex]

is irrational. Of the natural numbers, only the perfect squares 1,4,9,16,25,... have rational square roots.

If a natural number has a rational square root that square root must necessarily be a natural number. Can you see why?

The answer would be: [tex] \sqrt{5} [/tex] is an irrational number. Why?

Because the definition of an irrational number is that: It's a number that can not be expressed as a fraction, or as a whole number.

And you can not make [tex] \sqrt{5} [/tex] a fraction.

So that's why it's an irrational number.

Hope this helped :)
