Platelets are also called as thrombocytes. These are irregularly shaped structures which do not posses nucleus. They are not considered as true cells instead they are called as fragments. As they do not posses nucleus, they do not contain the nuclear DNA. But they do contain mitochondria, hence they also produce mitochondrial DNA. Their main function is to produce blood clots at the site of injuries. Hence, they prevent the loss of excess blood during bleeding.
