The British authorities had agreed not to take land from Native Americans prior to the American Revolution. On the other hand, American colonists often disrespected that agreement against the consent of both Native Americans and British officials. As a result, Native Americans took side with the British under the promise that their lands would be respected and kept out of the hands of American colonists.
