Strain theory argues individuals commit crimes because they cannot succeed within the boundaries society has created for them.

Strain theory states that certain stresses or stressors increase the likelihood of discomfort. These stresses lead to negative emotions such as frustration and anger. These feelings create pressure on corrective action, and crime is one of the possible responses.

Distortion theory argues that crime occurs when people do not have sufficient legitimate opportunities to achieve the usual success goals of society. In such situations, there is a "tension" between goals and the means by which they are achieved, and some turn to crime to find success.

According to Robert Agnew's general strain theory, stress is due to three different factors: failure to achieve goals, the presence of harmful stimuli, and lack of positive stimuli.
