Fungiform papillae resemble tiny mushrooms on the tongue, and have a vascular core that gives them a red color.

Fungiform papillae are mostly located in the anterior part of the dorsum of the tongue. About half of these are found near the tip and none are present in the midline region.

They can be easily observed with the unaided eye and appear as mushrooms in histological sections. In humans they appear bright red in color whereas in rats they are pale in color.

Taste buds are located amongst the epithelial cells of fungiform papillae. The epithelium covering the fungiform papillae is not thickened as it is in  the case of the filiform papillae.
